How to Clean Tanzanite Jewelry

If you have tanzanite in your jewelry collection, chances are you adore it and want to take the best care you can to protect this beautiful investment. We’ll teach you the best ways to clean these pieces, how to care for them and important tips for preventing damage.

This blue and purple variety of zoisite is unlike any other blue or purple gem you can think of, ranging from a soft bi-color variety to pleasing purples and the most valuable of its kind—a rich, intense blue. Tanzanite is a relatively sensitive gem with a 6.5 on the Mohs Hardness Scale, making it very important to take great care when handling and cleaning this stone. Other than its mesmerizing appearance, tanzanite is also highly sought-after due to its rarity being a single-source gemstone, discovered in Tanzania in 1967. Tanzanite was first brought to market by Tiffany & Co. in the late 1960s and has only gained in popularity since, even becoming an alternative gemstone for December babies.  

Soak jewelry in warm, soapy water. 

Warm, soapy water will allow every crevice of the piece to be cleaned and sterilized. Let jewelry soak for 5-10 minutes. 

Brush your jewelry gently with a soft-bristled brush. 

It is important that the brush is soft to avoid any damage to the piece. Pay special attention to the underside or back of your jewelry where dirt and dust can accumulate. 

Pat your jewelry dry with a soft, absorbent cloth. 

If the cloth is too rough, it may cause damage to the piece by scratching it. 

Store tanzanite jewelry pieces separately to prevent scratching. 

If jewelry is stored together, it may move and shift due to placing things in and out or even be scratched by another piece of jewelry in your collection. It is ideal to store your tanzanite jewelry pieces in soft pouches or a soft-lined jewelry box.

Start by opening the cleanser and pulling out the basket inside the container. Sit your jewelry on the strainer-like surface and slowly let the basket down to the bottom of the container. Let your jewelry soak in the cleanser for about two minutes. After two minutes, slowly pull up the basket and remove your jewelry.

Next, you'll want to take the small touch-up brush and gently clean the surface of your jewelry. Pay special attention to hard-to-reach areas. Rinse jewelry carefully with lukewarm water and blot dry with a soft, dry cloth.

After cleaning, you'll want to use your Jewelry Cleaning Essentials® polishing cloth and rub gently to remove any residue and add a finishing shine.
