The ingenious process involves filling the natural inclusions with molten lead glass. As the glass replaces air within the gems, the imperfections become less visible, dramatically improving the clarity, and sometimes, the color. ‘Mahaleo’--a Malagasy word meaning ‘to equal, to match, to parallel’-- is an apt name for a stone so closely resembling the color and appearance of gems from other prestigious locales. JTV originally sourced Mahaleo stones only from the continent of Africa but now we are pleased to offer beautiful Mahaleo stones from locations across the globe! Mozambique is an exotic land far away on the eastern coast of Africa. Among its treasures is the beautiful Vermelho Garnet, which features a rich combination of both the Pyrope Garnet species as well as the Almandine Garnet species. The Pyrope portion gives the stone its regal red color, while the Almandine portion brings in warm spicy shades of cinnamon. This spicy gemstone originates from a region known as Zambezia and is called Vermelho Garnet, meaning "red" in Portuguese, one of the official languages of this exotic country.
