Returning home to Minneapolis after an extended European honeymoon, Nelle Stevenson Snyder was the beautiful bride of 24-year old John Pillsbury Snyder. Newlywed Mr. Snyder was the grandson of former Minnesota Governor and noted philanthropist John Sargent Pillsbury, Co-Founder of the Pillsbury Company. Boarding the Titanic from Southampton, Nelle and John were soon settled into their First Class lodgings, with fond memories of their time in Italy and Gibraltar still fresh. Situated in cabin B45, they quickly became acquainted with fellow Minnesotan passengers, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Donald Douglas, Mr. and Mrs. William Baird Silvey and Miss Constance Willard. On that fateful April night of the collision with an iceberg, the Snyders had retired to their stateroom around 11:30pm but soon experienced a commotion. Entering the hallway, attempting to determine exactly what had happened, they were told that the ship had "grazed" an iceberg but not to be concerned and to go back to their cabin, which they did. A little later, they were aroused by a knock on the door of an adjoining passenger and a man's voice saying that something serious may have happened. Nelle and John immediately got dressed to investigate further. From the deck, Nelle and other well-heeled female passengers were instructed to board some of the available lifeboats. But Nelle and the other ladies refused to do so without their husbands so the crew consented to allow the gentlemen to join their wives. At the last minute, Nelle, who had already donned her lifebelt, realized she had left the emerald and diamond necklace worn on her wedding day in the cabin safe, so she dashed to retrieve it. Once aboard the rescue ship, the Carpathia, Nelle and John reunited with the three surviving females from their circle of new Minnesotan friends. After the harrowing ordeal, Nell and John made their way home to Minnesota once safely on U.S. soil again. In the following years Nell gave birth to three children, two sons and a daughter. Always world travelers at heart, Nell and John continued their adventures for decades. Upon John's death from a heart attack in 1959, widowed Nelle returned to her birth state of Wisconsin and kept herself busy with philanthropic work. She later became a member of the Titanic Historical Society. At the age of 94, she died in December 1983 and was buried with her beloved husband in Minneapolis.

Titanic Jewelry Collection

For four magical days, the Titanic's elite passengers reveled in every modern luxury known at the time. During the early part of the 20th century, it was considered quite sophisticated for wealthy families to spend portions of their time in Europe which meant crossing the Atlantic at least once per year. Even to these jaded travelers, the Titanic ship was like no other. Not only was it the most impressive ship of its time draped in every luxury imaginable but so were its passengers. The women of the Titanic would plan for months to bring the right fashionable apparel aboard such a luxurious ship. Along with extensive outfit planning came accessorizing: large hats, mink stoles, gloves and of course, the jewelry. Jewelry of that time was depictive of the Art Nouveau and Edwardian eras. Art Nouveau jewelry was influenced by naturalism involving unusual designs within a symmetrical frame often encompassing foliage, leaves, enamel, pearls, crystals and gemstones. Edwardian designs included more formal jewelry: tiaras, brooches, rings, pendants, earrings, bracelets and sautoir necklaces. Many were set with brilliant gemstones, including diamonds, crystals and of course, pearls. Join JTV as we embark upon a journey of adventure and elegance and celebrating the jewelry of the women aboard the Titanic.
