Get to Know Charles

How did your career as a designer begin?
I was born into the business of fine diamonds and extravagant jewelry. It was a natural fit for me to continue in the footsteps of the generations of Winstons before me.
What are your go-to gifts from JTV?
My go-to gifts from JTV are moissanite studs or pendants. After all, I speak about how beautiful this jewel is all the time. I want people to experience and enjoy this fabulous jewel.

Three jewelry items to bring on a trip?
I would bring stud earrings, a solitaire pendant and a statement ring on a trip.

What gives you the inspiration to design such unique pieces?
My inspiration comes from my desire to please people. I think even my humor comes from that same desire. I want people to feel special when they wear a piece of “Charles Winston” (the brand) and bring out the celebrity within them. That is one of my tag lines, “Jewelry for the Celebrity in you.”
What is your favorite gemstone to work with?
Hmmm, let me think. It is a 50/50 toss up between Moissanite Fire and my Bella Luce (CZ). Why, because I want to be able to bring the looks of really, super expensive fine jewelry to the world at a price they can hopefully afford.

What is your process for designing jewelry?
My process is pretty much like most designers. First I find out what is the client looking for? Bridal? Fashionable? Classic? Then I find out the budget. There is no point designing something that will be out of the client's budget. From there, we do a hand rendering….sometimes its not the prettiest as I am not good at drawing, but I can get my point and idea across. Once we see that we are on the same page, we then recreate the design in a computer assisted design (CAD). This is a 3-D rendering on the computer that really looks like it was a picture of an actual piece. Once this is approved, we make a wax model from the CAD. If that meets the clients approval, we then cast the item in either gold or platinum (or for our wholesale clients, generally in gold or silver).
