Product Description

New Item! Use this polariscope to determine the optical properties of gemstones. Rotate the analyzer; as light passes through the stone, the light is bent by refraction, and the viewer can judge whether the stone is single- or double-refracting and can assess the colors in the stone. A valuable tool for any gem enthusiast. Comes with a protective zippered case. AA batteries not included.

Flashlight shorts out -got hot -didn't workI never got a chance to use the polariscope portion because the flashlite shorts out, got hot and didn't work. From the photos it looks like a standard mini mag light, but it isn't. The polariscope only fits this special sized flashlight and does not fit any other similar flashlight so I couldn't replace it and use just the polariscope portion. I am a gemologist and always love a new tool that I can travel with. Although I know it is not designed for this purpost I hoped there might be a way to use it on mounted stones which is how most of us shop for jewelry but it would be very difficult if not nearly impossible to do so. Since there are very few singly refractive gemstone and it usually only becomes and ID problem with garnet and spinel I opted just to return this item and not replace it. June 16, 2012

Simple and AccurateEveryone else said the didn't get directions, but I did with the Polariscope and also there was a link to Adobe for a PDF set of directions. It is well worth the money for the 1st step in identifying single or double refraction in stone. It takes alittle workk to see exactly what the directions are saying, but if use stone that you know is singly refractive(Garnet)and see the results, when you do another stone the directions will just fall into place!! No instructions! There wasn't an instruction manual in the package, so I have not used this yet. I did order the Gem ID book, so I hope that will help me out. Great price though! June 16, 2012

Just okAs several others have indicated - no instructions were included which makes it difficult to figure out how to use. I haven't actually tried it yet as I need to figure out how - but for the price, it's worth trying. Does come with a nice zipper case. May 31, 2010

Very disappointedI bought this even though other reviewers said it came with no instructions. One had said they were available on the Learning Center. After I ordered it, I found that there were NO instructions on the website. I figured, okay, I'll just look them up on the internet. When it arrived, I did that. The ones on the internet are one-piece, with a built in light. This comes with a flashlight, no batteries. For the price, that's not a problem. I put in batteries, and it still didn't work. I do think it works, if you can hold a flashlight under it, but you have to be skilfull. It just doesn't seem to be worth having. I did consider keeping it, since shipping it back would be 1/3 the total cost, but it's going back by return mail. Sorry JTV, normally I am happy with your tools. May 29, 2010

Easy to Use, Spectacular PriceOnly one small complaint-no instructions included. But the price and quality of every tool/instrument I've purchased from you far outweighs looking up some information-especially when I can use your on-line Learning Library! This was my last piece of required equipment for my gemology class and I had checked prices at a couple of other places, but in all honesty most were prohibitive-at best! Thanks to JTV, and the purchase of the Polariscope, my 'lab' is fully equipped-and at just about half the price of the lowest figure quoted in Gem Identification Made Easy! May 27, 2013

undecidedI had to purchase this polariscope because the one I had fell apart. The flashlight fell apart where the bulb is. The glass kept popping out and wouldn't stay in which made it impossible to look at a gem. Hopefully this one will last longer. February 25, 2010
