Product Information
Spanish sphalerite 55.87ct 21.74x21.32x15.28mm round Marko-I-Noor cut faceted by Egor Gavrilenko. The gemstone was mined and cut in Spain. The gemstone comes with a Stone Group Labs Gemstone Identification and Origin Report. The President’s Collection by gemstones.com™ is a curated selection of loose gemstones and remarkable jewelry items created by the President of Gemstones.com, Tim Matthews, to open the world of gemstones to everyone. It features selections that are exquisite, highly-prized, and the rarest of the rare, expensive one-of-a-kind items suitable for the museum-level collectors. At the same time, the collection includes introductory value-oriented special gemstones that are great for the budget-minded, newly-interested gemstone lover. The hallmark of this collection, however, faithful to the vision of opening the world of gemstones to everyone, is that each and every item offers remarkable value at its price point.

An uncommon treasure for gemstone collectors, sphalerite is a gem that has few peers in the realm of gemstones. With 3.5 times more dispersion than diamond, its fiery beauty makes it a gem in high demand with gem lovers across the globe. While prized by collectors, the availability of gem quality material is, at best, quite scarce. Historically, Spain has been regarded as the premier source for the finest quality gems. When fashioning rough material into gems, it is all about the lapidary and the cutting process. Sphalerite presents great challenges to the gem cutter due to its lack of hardness, perfect cleavage and brittle nature. Yet, once a gem has been properly cut and polished, the final result is spectacular as the gems internal and external beauty has been revealed! Mother Nature wasn't shy as she was mixing sphalerite's formula. It is a zinc sulfide that contains varying amounts of iron, which determine its final color or blends of color. Named from the Greek word "sphaleros" meaning deceptive, its name is well deserved as it presents identification difficulties in the field without proper gemological tools. A gem not often seen, we invite you to discover the brilliance of sphalerite today at Jewelry Television and jtv.com.

This magnificent sphalerite was fashioned by master lapidary Egor Gavrilenko, who specializes in cutting gem quality Spanish sphalerite, a rare gem prized for its exceptional optical characteristics. Fascinated with geology and mineralogy since he was a child growing up in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Egor was surrounded by mineral crystals brought home by his geologist father. He turned his childhood passion into a successful career as he began working in the gem testing laboratory of the Spanish Gemological Institute (IGE) and later as a mineralogist and lecturer at the Spanish Open University (UNED). In 2007, Egor returned to his passion of lapidary work, concentrating primarily on precision faceting, developing new faceting designs and optimizing existing designs with the aid of computer technology. Egor's desire is for every gem lover to be aware of the incredible optical properties of Spanish sphalerite, made even more dazzling by his expert faceting!
