Kruss professional gemstone refractometer model ER601. This model
features a larger ocular lens than the compact model for easier viewing
of the scale. The lid is removeable for conducting spot readings. The
polarizing filter is included. This model does not feature an
integrated sodium filter or illumination. The optional light source
KRT9A, the sodium filter KRT9B, and Refractometer liquid GT3 are sold
separately on JTV.com.

The refractive index of the gemstone is read through the ocular of the refractometer. The refractive index is an important parameter in classifying a mineral or gemstone. Each mineral has its typical refractive index, due to its chemical composition and crystalline structure. The Kruss refractometers are characterized by their particularly sharp image, good readability and scratch-resistant hemicylinder. The scale reads 1.33 to 1.83 but readings are limited by the type of refractometer liquid used. The unit is lightweight and constructed out of aluminum.
