All of the Spanish sphalerite gemstones in our President's Collection are wonderful. The majority of these very large sphalerite gems were acquired from a well known lapidary from his personal collection. Usually, fine gems of these sizes, above 25 carats, that have exceptional custom lapidary cuts from the closed Aliva Mine in Spain are never seen. Get this one now, it is ideal for the serious collector!
This magnificent sphalerite was fashioned by master lapidary Egor Gavrilenko, who specializes in cutting gem quality Spanish sphalerite, a rare gem prized for its exceptional optical characteristics. Mr. Gavrilenko has been fascinated with geology and mineralogy since he was a child growing up in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Surrounded by mineral crystals brought home by his geologist father, Egor turned his childhood passion into a successful career as he began working in the gem testing laboratory of the Spanish Gemological Institute (IGE) and later as a mineralogist and lecturer at the Spanish Open University (UNED). Today, he is the IGE delegate to the Federation for European Education of Gemology (FEEG), holding the position of Vice Chairman since 2012. In 2007, Egor returned to his passion of lapidary work, concentrating primarily on precision faceting, developing new faceting designs and optimizing existing designs with the aid of computer technology. Egor's desire is for every gem lover to be aware of the incredible optical properties of Spanish sphalerite, made even more dazzling by his expert faceting!

With greater dispersion than diamond, sphalerite is an intriguing, yet challenging, gem. Known primarily to collectors due to its lack of hardness, sphalerite can try the patience of even the most highly skilled lapidaries who dare to fashion it into a finished gem. Not only is it extremely soft, it also has perfect cleavage, in six directions, making it extremely difficult to cut and polish! Add in the fact that it's a brittle gem, and you have an idea of the challenge that awaits its potential cutter. When that talented lapidary is, however, able to complete his task with a fashioned gem, the results are more than worth the lapidary's efforts!
