The pallasite meteorites in which peridots are found make up less than 1% of known meteorites. Peridots from meteorites must be discovered soon after they fall. With Earth covered mostly with water, this makes them a very rare find. Less than a quarter of the 61 known pallasitic meteorites have peridot material that is clean and large enough to facet.
