Kate Spade New York is the namesake brand of Kate Brosnahan Spade, a
former accessories editor for Mademoiselle. In 1991, Kate left
Mademoiselle to pursue her own own idea...the quest to design the
perfect handbag. With an artistic vision that combined sleek shapes and
a unique eye for color, Spade set out to conquer the world. Spade had no
formal training and would work with large sheets of paper in order to
create the now famous designs. Regular women and fashion editors alike
fell for her fresh approach. In 1996 the first Kate Spade shop opened in
New York City's SoHo. She was also awarded the Council of Fashion
Designers of America awarded Spade the New Fashion Talent in Accessories
Prize. Two years later, Spade won Best Accessory Designer of the Year.
Since then, the company grew to encompass not only handbags, but also
stationery, shoes, beauty products, eyewear and a full women's clothing
line. Kate Spade New York also has a complementary brand geared
exclusively towards men, named Jack Spade. Jack Spade, a fictional name,
was founded by Andy Spade, Kate Spade's husband. The two brands were
brought to life simultaneously by the husband and wife power-couple in
1993. The Kate Spade brand supports women who inspire to be
independent, creative, and understood. As a result, the Kate Spade New
York Foundation sponsors grants and donates over $1 million annually to
women's causes in New York City and beyond.
