The black hills of South Dakota are mountains blackened by the ponderosa pine trees. These mountains are the lands of legends, of dreams and the mystic of the old west. Black Hills Gold jewelry first appeared over 100 years ago after the Black Hills Gold Rush of 1876. Over a span of 14 years, 360 gold miners-turned-craftsmen carved a rough granite mountain into a polished national treasure, known today as Mount Rushmore. The craftsmen carry on the tradition of quality and excellence with every piece of Black Hills Jewelry. There are many steps involved in the handcrafting of a single delicate design. Each piece is cast, shaped, ground, polished, soldered, cleaned, wriggled and engraved by our skilled artisans. Legend tells us Black Hills Jewelry was inspired by a French goldsmith, Heri LeBeau. He was a starving minor sifting the streams, digging with a pic shovel and blasting into the hillside in search for this treasured metal. He fell asleep after a long day and dreamed of his native vineyards. When he awoke, he stumbled across a patch of wild grapes that satisfied his hunger to continue the search. Although Heri LeBeau never found gold, he designed jewelry in honor of the life saving grapes. He alloyed other metals with gold to create the pink and green leaves in the unique tri-colored jewelry he called "good luck jewelry" which was the inspiration for the now famous Black Hills Jewelry.
