The GemVue handheld polariscope is one of a series of tools that assist in gemstone and mineral identification. This tool is used in conjunction with other gem tools to narrow the range of possibilities when identifying stones and minerals. The primary purpose of this tool is to determine the optic character. Gemstones and minerals exhibit different structural forms. Some may be singly refractive, doubly refractive, or an aggregate of numerous microscopically small crystals. Each of these structures responds differently when viewed through a polariscope. This is a valuable tool for any gem enthusiast. Requires 2 AA batteries (not included). Includes zippered protective carrying case.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Used twice, got so hot it was hard to pick up! I don't know why it was hot, because I turned it on, then realized I forgot something, so I turned it off and put it down. When I went to pick it back up, it was hot and hard to hold. The batteries were really hot too when I took them out, but the light was not on. The way this works, you turn the top part to turn it on, making it far too easy to unscrew the top lens and light instead. If the bulb gets disconnected, you cannot fix it! It was fun while it lasted. It did come with directions, but when I returned the "hot" item, the new item did not have directions. Really a mixed bag here in terms of design and usefulness.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great tool but needs instruction sheet! This tool is great in assisting you in gem identification. However, when I received it, I felt I needed an instruction sheet. It was a very good price at the sale price. Full price, I think is too much for what I received. Please continue to present tools at an affordable price. Thanks JTV

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works well I like that it's compact but still does the job. It helps in identification but I'm still learning.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Looks great! I finally decided I needed some equipment if I was going to really collect gem stones. I have not used it yet, but I am happy with my purchase. I read the other reviews and bought the polariscope because of the price.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Interesting, but no instructions! I have been very frustrated with this, because I was really looking forward to learning more about how to identify gemstones. There were no instructions and the customer service person I spoke to was less than helpful -almost rude. However, I did find the instructions on the website and was finally able to print them after a lot of trial and error. Now I'm excited about the polariscope again! The bottom line is, don't give up. The instructions are available on the website.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Where's the instructions???? I like this purchase and I think the quality and value are great, but I was very surprised that there were no instructions on how to use this tool. I have purchased several tools from JTV and they always come with instructions, this one didn't. I'm not worried, or going to send it back because I have the book from JTV on gemstone identification which explains how to use all of the different gemological tools, but it would have been nice to have specific instructions for this purchase. Reading other reviews, I see I'm not the only one who thought this.
