Mahaleo gemstones hail from the exotic continent of Africa, including the island nation of Madagascar, located 250 miles off the African coast. Madagascar, long recognized as one of the most biologically diverse areas on the planet, is one of the primary sources for Mahaleo gemstones. The Madagascar stones are large in size, but often contain numerous inclusions and fissures, so a method to enhance their beauty was developed and perfected. The ingenious process involves filling the natural inclusions with molten glass. As the glass replaces air within the gems, the inclusions become less visible and their clarity is dramatically improved. Because their allure and essence match that of premier colors from other locales, they are aptly named Mahaleo, meaning "to equal, to match, to parallel" in Malagasy, one of Madagascar's official languages
