Product Description

Arizona Anthill Garnet Average .45ct 5x5mm Trillion. Gemstone Mined In The United States And Cut In China.

Pyrope garnet, long known for its saturated red color, is found in various world locations. But a very special variety is homegrown in the USA-Anthill Garnet. But how does such a beautiful gem get such a strange-sounding name? Found primarily in the four corners area of Arizona, which meets with southwest Colorado, northwest New Mexico and southeast Utah. These small Garnets are called Anthill Garnets because they are mined by ants. It is the ants that do the excavation work when digging or remodeling their anthills! Pyrope Garnet, including Anthill Garnet, is generally a purer red than other Garnet varieties. It's easy to see how they could be confused for Ruby with their fiery red color. The name Pyrope is derived from "pyropos" meaning fire-like or fiery-eyed. Never mined commercially due to limited supply, AntHill Garnet is collected by locals after occasional rainstorms. Fiery in color, Anthill Garnets are an extraordinary American Gem!

GREAT GARNETS!!I finally purchased a homegrown gemstone! This little beauty is full of fire and red flashes when the light hits it. Doesn't show any bronze coloring. Under low light conditions it does look a little dark...but hey...it's a garnet! The cut and polish are really top-notch. I am putting it in a pendant setting with an 8x8 trillion ruby that I also purchased from JTV...for a mother-daughter birthstone pendant. Thanks to JTV I am getting back into the jewelry game. Everything I have produced using JTV gemstones and settings draws rave reviews from family, friends, and co-workers. March 19, 2014

little stones pack a big punchThese stones appear to be black until you shine a light on them. Then, the deepest dark shade of red is evident. I think the ants should be put on some kind of growth burst so we could get bigger stones. Thanks JTV March 19, 2014

Very Neat!I loved the story of the ants and the Native Americans working together to "mine" the garnets! No chemicals. No explosions. Man and nature working together instead of against each other! The garnet itself is very dark. I'm not sure it will even look red when it's set, but I don't care. If it looks black and white, well, that will make it even more versatile! March 19, 2014

TY hard working little ants !!I was pleasantly surprised when this garnet arrived today. The color is so much better than the picture -- especially under incandescent lights. Its a deep blood red with tons of sparkle, no bronzy color that would be typical of pyrope garnets. And no visible inclusions. A good match for my Bohemian garnet earrings -- though slightly darker. And what other gemstone can beat this story! A rare beauty, a real conversation starter. You won't be disappointed in this stone. March 19, 2014
