Product Description

Anthill Garnet Average .25ct 4mm Round. Gemstone From Arizona.

Pyrope garnet, long known for its saturated red color, is found in various world locations. But a very special variety is homegrown in the USA-Anthill Garnet. But how does such a beautiful gem get such a strange-sounding name? Found primarily in the four corners area of Arizona, which meets with southwest Colorado, northwest New Mexico and southeast Utah. These small Garnets are called Anthill Garnets because they are mined by ants. It is the ants that do the excavation work when digging or remodeling their anthills! Pyrope Garnet, including Anthill Garnet, is generally a purer red than other Garnet varieties. It's easy to see how they could be confused for Ruby with their fiery red color. The name Pyrope is derived from "pyropos" meaning fire-like or fiery-eyed. Never mined commercially due to limited supply, AntHill Garnet is collected by locals after occasional rainstorms. Fiery in color, Anthill Garnets are an extraordinary American Gem!

To have anthill garnet as a birth stone, an honorThe stones are bright and beautiful. To have this gem of my birth stone garnet be unearthed by ants is an honor to wear. They work hard to bring me a gem to wear. I placed them in white gold for my ears. Love them! May 22, 2013

Bright Red Color!I was so pleasantly surprised when I recieved this beatiful glowing Garnet. The Anthill Garnet is one of the prettiest garnets JTV has to offer. Those ants must work pretty darn had to carry the rough so that we may experience the beautiful bright red color the Anthill variety. It has a special glow about it that all garnets do no not give us. I highly recommend ths gemsone for anyone's collection. April 10, 2013

Vibrant Red ColorWhat great stones these are with a great story behind them, also. They have the most vibrant red color and clarity, surpassing any Ruby I have ever seen. The fact that ants mine these gems (from our own United States) makes for excellent conversation when someone comments on them. Everyone should add these gems to their collection. February 01, 2013

beautifulThis stone looked so small when I first got it. Then I had it set into a sterling silver ring....and it came alive. The color is the most beautiful and true red I have ever seen. I love the fact that tiny ants mine them. A truly unique gem' January 19, 2013

Red StarI wanted this just because of the story of the Anthill Garnet, and am thrilled by the stones. Although small, (.25 ct) the color is amazingly vibrant and the pair of stones I received will make a great pair of Anthill Garnet stud earrings. April 10, 2013

What an amazing story anthill garnet has!I ordered this garnet just for its story. How amazing, and hard to believe that ants "mine" this garnet! Even the small size of this garnet adds to its mystery! How could an ant carry that? The color is awesome! And I like that it comes from the USA! April 10, 2013

True REDThe web shows these as so red, they look almost black unless it had light shining from the back; but these really are RED, like what you think of when you think of red lipstick, just super saturated, like each and every particle of the garnet was born that RED RED RED. Beautiful. April 10, 2013

Beautiful color.I didn't realize how small this was until I received in the mail. I would have given it a five star rating, but when I went to put the garnet in the Gemtite Casting, it shot of my desk and into my carpet, never to be seen again. Heart broken. April 10, 2013
