Automation Engineer/Specialist

As the largest retailer of loose gemstones in the world, Jewelry Television Inc. recognizes its mission is to open the world of fine jewelry and gemstones to everyone, every day. As part of this mission, Jewelry Television is expanding and is currently in the process of installing an automated storage and retrieval system that will assist in the rapid fulfillment of customer orders. Schaefer Systems International Inc. is Jewelry Television's logistics partner in this endeavor. This new sophisticated system will require extremely high availability and many of the automation components will be user operated and maintained. To this end, Jewelry Television is hiring a newly created Automation Engineer position to assist with this installation and ongoing operation of Jewelry Television's automation systems.

This Automation Engineer position will report to our Senior Director of Software Engineering with heavy involvement with our Senior Vice President of Operations and Logistics. An ideal candidate for this position possesses:
• Understanding of automation principles and programmable logic controllers
• Critical thinking and problem-solving skills to resolve operational issues related to automation
• Technical knowledge to set up electronic control systems for mechanical equipment, including integrating electrical wiring requirements to pneumatic and hydraulic systems
• Expert level understanding of wiring schematics, electrical drawings, circuits and computer programming

Key Responsibilities:

• System monitoring, debugging and troubleshooting operational problems
• Analysis of equipment failures and fault data typically generated from automation systems to present findings and potential resolutions
• Making repairs and performing preventive maintenance activities
• Managing tools and service equipment required for making repairs and performing maintenance
• Selection of appropriate spare part inventory and maintenance
• Labeling the wiring and equipment for safety and rapid problem resolution
• Maintaining a clean and organized work area and warehouse floor
• Test, maintain and modify existing industrial control systems used for production & building equipment or the support of production equipment
• Documenting and making backups of the PLC programs designed for the equipment
• Document sequence of operation and best practices for maintenance and repair of automated systems on production equipment
• Actively participate and drive compliance with relevant health and safety regulations, and quality standards
• Provide consultation on area of expertise to internal operations departments
• Work in collaboration with internal staff on various maintenance projects/tasks


• Education: College degree or minimum of Journeyman Electrician
• Experience: Minimum 2 years in an Industrial Maintenance Environment or heavy PLC experience through an internship or contract position
• Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: As required by state and local authority

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Ability to troubleshoot electrical control system on industrial equipment and machinery
• Ability to read and interpret drawing, schematics and symbols
• Ability to effectively and professional communicate both verbally and written
• Proficient in PLCs/Programming
• Working with AC/DC motors and drives
• Working with voltages up to 220VAC
• Proficient knowledge and ability to use desktop and mobile PCs
• Ability to work flexible hours to support automation equipment as needed, potentially on evening and weekends in the case of system or equipment faults
