Strength, Honor and Hope

The Beads of Courage program exists to bring joy, hope and courage to children and their families coping with cancer and other serious illnesses. Through the program, children receive colorful beads for different milestones and treatments. The child’s bead collection is a tangible, visible symbol of their courageous journey.

Kelbie Faircloth

Kelbie Faircloth

Story (from mom, Jessica Faircloth):

My daughter’s name is Kelbie Faircloth and she is 14 months old now. She was diagnosed in utero with a complex heart defect. Her complete diagnosis is Double Inlet Left Ventricle with Pulmonary Stenosis and Transposition of the Great Arteries (TGA). During her last surgery, the stress the surgery had on her heart put her in Complete Heart Block, which required her to have a permanent pacemaker placed in her abdomen. We are awaiting her Fontan surgery which will be done when she is approximately three years of age. Her beads are very special to us. She will forever be able to tell her story of courage and it really puts into perspective everything she went through and conquered. I know that being able to collect her beads as she gets older will help her be brave through future medical procedures as well.

Benjamin Bonenko

Story (from mom, Jacque Bonenko):

Benjamin just turned 10 years old. He’s being treated for multiple chronic illnesses. Through all the hospital stays, infusions, transfusions, medical testing and procedures, not feeling well, bad days and great days, Ben’s Beads of Courage are always by his side.

Benjamin says:

I know I can keep my fight up, as my beads always remind me how courageous, strong, and brave I am. Plus I think the bead makers put magic in every bead, because how else would they make me feel good? I smile and feel proud every time I’m given one!

Apollo Bergeron

Story (from mom, Renee Bergeron):

Apollo, now five years old, was diagnosed with a double aortic arch (heart defect) at the age of 18 months old. In 2012, he had two heart surgeries and a G-tube placed. Apollo loves to look at his beads and have me tell him what each one means. We take them with us to the hospital for every overnight stay and every surgery. The beads also help tell the story to Apollo's siblings, who don't always understand why he has to go to the hospital and see doctors so much. Beads of Courage has given our entire family a positive way to look back over Apollo's journey.
