Product Description

Anthill Garnet Average .30ct 4.5mm Round. Gemstone From Arizona.

Pyrope garnet, long known for its saturated red color, is found in various world locations. But a very special variety is homegrown in the USA-Anthill Garnet. But how does such a beautiful gem get such a strange-sounding name? Found primarily in the four corners area of Arizona, which meets with southwest Colorado, northwest New Mexico and southeast Utah. These small Garnets are called Anthill Garnets because they are mined by ants. It is the ants that do the excavation work when digging or remodeling their anthills! Pyrope Garnet, including Anthill Garnet, is generally a purer red than other Garnet varieties. It's easy to see how they could be confused for Ruby with their fiery red color. The name Pyrope is derived from "pyropos" meaning fire-like or fiery-eyed. Never mined commercially due to limited supply, AntHill Garnet is collected by locals after occasional rainstorms. Fiery in color, Anthill Garnets are an extraordinary American Gem!

LOVE the story, LOVE Anthill GarnetTake a look at this in the sun or pen light... GLOWING. Pure unadulturated RED. I wont fib to you, this is a small stone, but the cutting and clarity of my stone are great. There is something special about this garnet if ants decorate their hills with it!! July 18, 2013

DISAPPOINTINGWhen presented on TV this looked extradinary - BUT in person not so. The color is really nice - the size of this stone is so small it's hard to see any color. Returning - not what I expected. April 13, 2012

WISH I HAD GONE BIGGER!These stones are absolutely gorgeous! The red is so beautiful. I wish I had gotten the bigger ones now! Bought 2 and set them in rosegold earring castings. So pretty but a little small. If I see anthill garnet again I will buy it - so much prettier than it looks online! December 26, 2012

GREAT ADDITION TO MY COLLECTIONThese gorgeous garnets (I bought two) are a luscious color with slight purple overtones. They will look great in the earring castings I purchased at the same time. April 13, 2012

Best cut for Anthill GarnetThis round cut is the most beautiful to show-off the fire of Anthill Garnet. I do have others, but in different cuts, and the sparks of red just don't come through as well. If you like collecting colored stones, you really have to add this garnet to your stash. There really isn't a sort-of endless supply of Anthill Garnet, and most folks haven't even heard of it. You'll have to correct them when they say what a nice "ruby" you have! March 14, 2012

I love anthill garnetsI LOVE ANTHILL GARNETS with their intense velvety redness and was thrilled when I received 12 of Item G1r168 the first week of March 2010. Described as '.30ct AVERAGE', the stones I received were: .34, .35, .36, three .37, .38 and .42, and the stones I returned were .34, .35, .37 and .38. The four I returned had heavy inclusions and were the ones on which the culets were most badly off center, each of which adversely affected brilliance. I sent them back for exchange and look forward to receiving their replacements. They apparently are unique and in short supply, so I don't know if they are a bit pricey, but they still are RECOMMENDED. April 13, 2012
