Bixbite, also known as red emerald or red beryl, is not only the rarest variety in the beryl family, but also one of the rarest gems on the planet. When you think of beryl, there are many varieties, including emerald, aquamarine, morganite, goshenite, heliodor, green beryl, golden beryl and bixbite. While many of these beryl varieties are well known, the same cannot be said about bixbite. One of the most collectible and highly desirable of all gemstones, bixbite was first discovered in the Thomas Range of Utah in 1904. A subsequent discovery in Utah's Wah Wah Mountains in 1958 uncovered the first (and to date, only) source of gem-quality crystals.
