Is this natural spinel?
I know this is identified as simulated aquamarine, but I noticed the gem type is identified as spinel and seem to remember that real spinel is often used as a substitute for aqua.

These are a simulant and not a natural spinel. If these were spinel, JTV would present them as "spinel" and not aquamarine simulants. I would contact JTV customer service for more information. I am confident in stating to you that these are not substituted as spinel but that they are simulated blue stones (similar to cubic zirconia). Thank you.Gender: Female

No it is not spinel. JTV always identifies all gems, this is listed as synthetic, and identified as simulant, meaning it is not a natural gem but one that is lab created to copy a natural stone. For more details you can always call the 800 # or do the Live Chat with a representative. Had it been a real spinel, it would probably state "aquamarine colored spinel".Gender: Female

Out on a limb I go: Yes, SYNTHETIC spinel is used for many reasons. I'm glad you read the info on these Aqua Sims. Are they Natural Spinel? I don't think it's likely, because to find natural blue spinel (and I do have one) is like a needle in a haystack. The price is also high for good material. These were lab grown, probably spinel as you suggest. One way to confirm spinel is to use a Dichroscope because spinel is singly refractive. Only a handful of JTV gems are singly refractive.Gender: Female
