The Presidium Reflectivity Meter is designed to identify diamonds, moissanites, and gemstones based on their optical properties. Designed to identify polished gemstones, the PRM measures the quantity of light reflected through the gemstone in order to provide an instant reading of its reflective index. Includes a built in reflectivity chart which list the most common gemstones for immediate reference. The Presidium Reflectivity Meter is developed to help you distinguish between Diamond from its simulants. Reflectivity Measurement makes use of the fact that diamond and its simulants reflect light proportionally to their respective refractive index, harness and perfection of polish. Since the first reflectivity instrument for gemstones identification was built by L.C. Trumper in 1959, this concept has been widely used in the jewelry trade. Today, there are many newly released Diamond simulants with its thermal properties that are so close to those of Diamond. Operates thru a 120v power adapter or 9 volt battery. Alkaline batteries should be used. Ordinary batteries may be used but will give a shorter working life. Detailed instructions included.

Answer:
There are many charts on the internet that can be used. Just do a search, right click on the chart, select all, and save to your pictures. If you can find a pdf chart, (you can tell a pdf document because it will have options around the side much as MS Word) save it as a document. From there go into your documents or pictures and print. Since you saved this to your computer, you can come back if your other copy gets worn and print a new one. I would have thought they would have included the chart since the results mean nothing without it.

This tool measures the quantity of light reflected through the gemstone in order to make a reading.
Geological Refractometer deters the identity of the gemstone by the amount a beam of light bends as it enters a gemstone and then strikes a subsequent surface(s), which is known as the gem's reflective index or RI.

Answer:
The difference is a Refractometer cant measure Diamonds, Sphene, Sphalerite, Demantoid Garnets, CZ and more of the very high refractive gemstones. The Reflectivity Meter can measure Diamonds, Yag, CZ, Strontium and more of the higher refractives. Both the Reflectivity Meter and the Refractometer use optical properties of the gemstones to identify them from one another. So it depends on the stones you have.

Answer:
Both the Reflectivity Meter and the Refractometer use optical properties of the gemstones to identify them from one another. The Reflectivity Meter, however, does not need RI fluid. Both should be used in conjunction with other gem identification tools and books on gem identification- many of which are available on- site.

Answer:
Yes it will identify other gemstones. But this is a great tool to have if you have stones to check with a high refractive index that a Refractometer will not check. Great for identifying Diamonds , Sphene, Demantoid Garnets, YAG, ect.

If you read the description carefully, it does state that this tool identifies colored gemstones- as long as they are faceted. Please refer to the full description before deciding if these responses answer your question.

This tool is a great place to start in your journey of gemstone identification. You may also want to pick up some of the books on jtv.com. This device gives you reading and you use the chart to see what gemstone corresponds with it. Here's the details: The Presidium Reflectivity Meter is designed to identify diamonds, moissanites, and gemstones based on their optical properties. Designed to identify polished gemstones, the PRM measures the quantity of light reflected through the gemstone in order to provide an instant reading of its reflective index. Includes a built in reflectivity chart which list the most common gemstones for immediate reference. I hope this helps.

Answer:
You place your gemstone on the meter. The meter measures the quantity of light reflected through the stone and is then able to identify instantly your gemstone based on its optical properties.

Where can I get a chart to go with this tool?

Received the tool and set it to use. Tested several stones, wrote down the numbers and went to look them up. There is no list, chart, etc. to identify the gems with. If I wanted to only test diamonds and simulants, there would be no issue as these are listed on the tool itself. However, I do not know the reflectivity of a topaz, morganite, citrine, etc. so how do I use this to identify colored gems, (as it is advertised to do) without a chart? Can you please give me information on how to acquire one? If not this will have to come back. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.

Does the clarity and size of the table on the stone matter?

I've seen other instruments like this and they state that 3mm tables or larger are reccomended. Also, that inclusions will affect the reading., They also reccomend more than one reading...to move the stone 180 degrees. Are all these reccomended with this tool also ?

Answer:
I wouldn't think that the clarity of the stone would matter, unless it's a stone which is normally free of inclusions. Since an opaque stone, Hematite, has the highest reflectivity, I would think that the cut and polishing would make more of a difference. Also, it would stand to reason, as the other respondent pointed out, that the stone would have to be a minimum size to read correctly. Also make sure your stone is clean and use tweezers to place them on the machine. Hope this helps.

Answer:
The meter measures the quantity of light reflected through the gemstone to determine the identity, therefore the clarity would not be a determining factor. I believe that significant inclusions would make a difference. If it is enough to impede the meter from making an accurate reading. I think these are all questions you would consider on a case by case situation as you evaluate each stone.
