Matched Pair From Arizona Anthill Garnet Average .60ctw 4.5mm Round.
AntHill Garnet Pyrope garnet, long known for its saturated red color, is found in various world locations. But a very special variety is homegrown in the USA-Anthill Garnet. But how does such a beautiful gem get such a strange-sounding name? Found primarily in the four corners area of Arizona, which meets with southwest Colorado, northwest New Mexico and southeast Utah. These small Garnets are called Anthill Garnets because they are mined by ants. It is the ants that do the excavation work when digging or remodeling their anthills! Pyrope Garnet, including Anthill Garnet, is generally a purer red than other Garnet varieties. It's easy to see how they could be confused for Ruby with their fiery red color. The name Pyrope is derived from "pyropos" meaning fire-like or fiery-eyed. Never mined commercially due to limited supply, AntHill Garnet is collected by locals after occasional rainstorms. Fiery in color, Anthill Garnets are an extraordinary American Gem!
