This is an aquamarine simulant.. Simulants were started in the 17 century. The exact cemicals are mixed and the perfect growing conditions are created to develope the crystal that will become the simulant. Some simulants are so good that it takes a professional to tell the difference. The good and bad part are that they are perfect stones without imperfections. If you enjoy finding the imprefections in the aquamarine a simulant may not be your choice. (I like to look for the lillypad that some aquamarines have.) If you enjoy the beautiy of a perfect stone, as most of us do, a simulant is a good choice.

This is a synthetic (lab grown) spinel used as an aquamarine simulant. In this case, the shade of blue is that of fine aquamarine.
