She married John Thayer, vice president of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Marian and John traveled to Europe to reunite with their 17-year-old son, Jack Thayer. On April 10, 1912, they boarded the Titanic in Cherbourg, France with Jack and their maid Miss Fleming. While onboard they met their friends George and Eleanor Widener and attended the private dinner party with other distinguished guests including Captain Edward J. Smith. The family was preparing for bed when the collision occurred. Jack went up immediately to wake his parents, who accompanied him back to the port side of the ship. Noticing that the Titanic was developing a list to port, they returned to their rooms and put on warmer clothes and life vests.
