Lady Duff was practically penniless until her skill as a seamstress helped her raise enough money to open Maison Lucile in a ritzy part of London. She developed a skill for designing unique "personality" dresses for her wealthy clients and finishing the designs with her signature handmade flowers. She also attracted the attention of Sir Cosmo Duff Gordon. They married and he introduced her to the society of European royals.
