When you say large----how large. I havent tried cabachon focal stones but the other stones---some 10 carat strawberry quarts and sun stones-it worked fine.

My answer to your question is this. I had the same problem with the stone tweezer it does not open up enough for large stones. But thats not a problem i use an old gem jar with the white sponge and cut an oval slit in the center so light can go through without the stone falling into the hole. I set my large 30,00ct Lemon Quartz over the hole i cut then set it under the microscope. I still have about 3/4 of an inch of travel before i hit the top of the travel. This works for me and hope it helps you my JTV friend.

Answer:
The eyepiece can only be roled up so far. If the stone is too big, the eyepiece can not be moved up enough to focus. For the price, this is one of the best microscopes around. It is for small gemstones, not for large rocks. I am pretty sure it will take a 30ct. faceted stone, but not a silver dollar sized rock. Check JTV's on line tools section, they have other more sophisticated and larger microscopes. This one might just not be for you.
