Are these two tools only for use with colored gems; or are they useful in determining, for example, a diamond?

Answer:
for diamond,I would use the diamond tester,or better yet the diamond and moissanite tester,to be 100% sure. It's accurate and very easy, this 2 tools you need detail instruction and charts and they don't come with it.The tester, you just need battery and voila' done,no college degree,I just find it a lot more simple and useful, for diamonds than any other tool.Hope this help.

Hello Muon (is this a sub-atomic particle moniker?).... The calcite dichroscope is for colored stones (but watch for a caveat regarding telling earth's stones from synthetics). As for the diamond question, I'm going to refer you to JTV's expert Library, simply because that's where I get 99% of my technical information. The spectroscope is a wonderful instrument, and can be very helpful with "Certain" diamonds. I just won't stick my neck out any farther. Please, if you're interested in gem collecting, reselling, etc., get a few good reference books, and JTV has had my favorite for quite a few years. It's called, "Gem Identification Made Easy," by Antionette Matlins, P.G., & A.C, Bonanno, F.G.A., etc, etc.
Hope this helps. Sincerely, Cindy in FL
(If you're looking for a good diamond tester, JTV usually stocks them, too)

What books and/or videos do you sell to help me use the tools above?

I am so tempted to buy the kit above - the dichroscope and diffraction spectroscope. I have bunches of gemstones from a source different than JTV, amethysts, ametrines, citrine, golden & madeira, etc. I have multiple stones over 30-40 carats each.

If I buy the tool, I want to be sure I can use it. Please tell me what books or videos you have which would give detailed explanation and/or pics of what to look for when using the tools.

Please hurry so I can still get the tools before they sell out or go up in price.

Thanks!

If you buy this kit,I just want to let you know it doesn't come with instruction for the dichroscope and it has useless ones for the spectroscope, you will have to either buy a book,or download the instructions on the web, with a search engine for how to use them both, good luck and hope this help.

Answer:
JTV has one book on the spectroscope its item # BOOK000027. It is very good for learning how to use the scope but dose not have color charts. I would highly suggest you buy this kit for the value and price. Separately these scopes cost $99.99 here on JTV. You can find many books online that have the color RI chart.

Ms. Houston, I have a problem....I have competing software that just caused my answer to your question to go "poof" into the night. All I can do now is summarize:

First: Go to JTV's Learning Library. I bought a number of reference books there. If they still have "Gem Identification Made Easy", I recommend you buy it. I have 2 editions -- both dog-eared from constant use.

Next: If you've already purchased the 2 field instruments and need help NOW, click on the postage-stamp size icon on upper left of any JTV page, and ask them if I've missed any info you need.

Now: You really buy 30+ct stones from some place that might make you nervous? Been there. You can trust the JTV team. I am just another gem junkie who also trusts JTV,

Best of luck to you! Sincerely, Cindy in FL

Hi, Houston. We have a problem. JTV seems to be very low on books right now. I didn't find the one I was looking for before I answered your question. I think one of the best for beginners is "Gem Identification Made Easy." JTV usually has that but is out. I expect they will get it in, though. They do have a copy of "The Spectroscope & Gemology". I haven't used that one but since it is a whole book on just the Spectorscope I don't see how you could go wrong to start with that. Also, there are lots of free on-line tutorials for all the tools. JTV has some in their archives on some of the tools, especially the refractometer. I wouldn't let the lack of a book keep me from getting the tools at a good price. You will be able to find instructions. It really is fun to learn to identify the gems for yourself, but it is frustrating if you don't have someone you can ask questions of. I go back to my books continually. Good luck.

Answer:
JTV currently has a copy of "the Spectroscope & Gemology" in stock. I haven't used that one but since it is on just the spectroscope, it should supply plenty of information. The best book I found when I first started trying to ID gems was "Gem Identification Made Easy". JTV usually has that in stock but I didn't see it in a search. I expect they will get it back. It gives the basics on all the identification tools. Doesn't go into complete depth, but gets you started. I still go back to it from time to time. They are out of almost all their books right now. Hope they haven't stopped carrying them. There are also on-line tutorials that are free that you can find. Hope this helps a little.

JTV does have one book on the spectroscope it is item number BOOK000027. But it does not have colored charts. If you do an internet search on spectrum charts you will find a few very good books that include color charts.
