Answer:
Hello Muon (is this a sub-atomic particle moniker?).... The calcite dichroscope is for colored stones (but watch for a caveat regarding telling earth's stones from synthetics). As for the diamond question, I'm going to refer you to JTV's expert Library, simply because that's where I get 99% of my technical information. The spectroscope is a wonderful instrument, and can be very helpful with "Certain" diamonds. I just won't stick my neck out any farther. Please, if you're interested in gem collecting, reselling, etc., get a few good reference books, and JTV has had my favorite for quite a few years. It's called, "Gem Identification Made Easy," by Antionette Matlins, P.G., & A.C, Bonanno, F.G.A., etc, etc.
Hope this helps. Sincerely, Cindy in FL
(If you're looking for a good diamond tester, JTV usually stocks them, too)
