Answer:
I don't know. The prongs may be differrent. I tried to set a cab. opal in a casting that wasn't specifically designed for a cab and it didn't work.

Answer:
Absolutely! You simply set the stone face up and gently but firmly press the prongs down to hold it in place. You will be amazed at how many beautiful pieces you can create by setting them yourself. Have fun!

Answer:
No it is not. The gemtite settings are for faceted stones not cabochons.

Answer:
This type of setting has prongs that are meant to fit around the girdle of the stone. It is possible to set a cab if you are prepared to alter the prongs in a number of tricky ways. i.e. straighten the prongs, use a little glue (that just might give it a designer appeal). JTV has many castings meant for cabs. I would opt for a different mount unless your heart is set on this particular one. Customer care would be happy to help you find one to fit your cab.

This castting is notched for a faceted stone and will not be suitable for a cabochon stone.

Answer:
not really because the prongs snap on the sides of the faccets and you need the depth, and cabochons are usually too flat to fit properly ,I tried and for me it didn't work.Hope this help.

Answer:
You can set a cab in this Gemtite, especially a drusy. However, for an opal cab I would recommend you use an actual cab Gemtite setting as the prongs will be better to hold your cab correctly. With the closed back, whichever one you use you can very carefully use a tiny dab of glue to hold the cab more securely in place. I haven't done that for any of my cab settings though, and I have not had a single problem with them holding just fine.

Answer:
Yes i have done crazy things like putting a Cabochon in a Gemtite. I had to cut down the prongs some and get the little kink out of it. Make sure your Cabochon is small enough to fit down inside. I measure how much prong i need to only curve up over the stone enough to keep it from coming out after the prongs are bent over. It does not hurt to experiment thats how you learn. But for a beginner it might be a challenge so have patients.

Answer:
Yes- just as long as the cabachon stone is a 7x5 mm pear shaped cabachon. Otherwise, I would not try to set an oval or round cabachon into a pear-shaped setting. It needs to be the same size gem in millimeter-wise as the setting in order for it to successful be set inside the setting to hold it securely for you, especially if you are setting into sterling silver vs. solid gold. Certainly you wouldn't want to lose the gem if it was not set into the right millimeter-size setting. The prongs look long enough in this particular semi mount above to support a cabachon in the 7x5 pear shaped size. You can also call JTV customer service to ask them more specific questions about this product in relation with the size cabachon stone you are trying to set into it. Thank you.
