These small Garnets are called Anthill Garnets because they are mined by ants. It is the ants that do the excavation work when digging or remodeling their anthills! Pyrope Garnet, including Anthill Garnet, is generally a purer red than other Garnet varieties. It's easy to see how they could be confused for Ruby with their fiery red color. The name Pyrope is derived from "pyropos" meaning fire-like or fiery-eyed. Never mined commercially due to limited supply, AntHill Garnet is collected by locals after occasional rainstorms. Fiery in color, Anthill Garnets are an extraordinary American Gem!
