The inspiration for the name Berquem (pronounced Bur kwim) is a Flemish diamond polisher by the name of Louis de Berquem. In 1476, this distinguished gentleman was believed to be the earliest diamond cutter. Louis de Berquem defined the principle of "absolute symmetry" that is used in the placement of facets on a diamond.
