I think you can only use this to check on the nature of stones,not metal,because it gives you the refractive index of them,and you match them on the chart,but I'm not 100% sure,so I would call customer service and find out for sure.Hope this help.Gender: Female

The simple answer is: no. RFI fluid is used to provide an optical contact between a gem stone and the hemicylinder of a Refractometer. Utilizing a light beam (normally in the back of the Refractometer), one looks through the Ocular of the Refractomerer,reads the line between light and dark on the scale, thus is able to determine the refractive index of a gemstone.However, with a metal, the light is unable to pass through.
